Life Lessons from Charlie, My Pup – v.1

January 19, 2016 | 16 Comments

It’s really no secret that I’m borderline obsessed with my dog, Charlie. Well, all dogs really. What can I say? The wet nose, wagging tails and cuddly warm bodies get me every time!

The other day I was cuddling with Charlie on the couch (standard), thinking about how nice he has it – cuddles all day, plays with the girls, gets fed and scratched and is given way too many treats. And then it sort of hit me – I could learn a lot from this pup. Seriously!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some “life lessons” I’ve picked up on, just from watching my dog.

Life Lesson #1 – All You Need is Family.

It’s no secret that I’ve been having a difficult time with our transition to Texas.  I miss my best friends terribly, miss being physically close to my family, and miss life in Chicago in general.  But guess what?  I have my family.  I have my husband, who works so hard for us.  I have E and A, and they are generally healthy, which is such a blessing in itself.  I have a great house that the five of us (Charlie included!) call home.

Charlie is happiest when we are all in the same room.  Saturday mornings on our bed, cuddling and planning the day, he is at peace.  On the couch watching a movie, he is at peace.  When the girls get home from school, and with Daddy they play fetch with him, he is at peace.  Watching him so happy to just have us together reminds me that as long as my family is happy, I can be happy too.  Sure, I might be four states away from everything and everyone I’ve ever known, but my family is together and that is something I am extremely grateful for.

Linking up with Emily for Grateful Heart Monday.

    Sweet pup!

    • Meagan

Thank you! He knows it :)

  • Runwright

There’s lots to learn as long as we are willing students.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

    • Meagan

Absolutely – well said. I hope you’ll be back to read more!

  • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life

I can’t wait to follow this series. Our animals can teach us so much. I’m loving his picture – so sweet.

    • Meagan

Thanks Sheryl! I just needed to actually “listen” to what he was trying to teach me – took 8 years!!

      • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life

Just remember it takes a long time as adults to finally hear things.

        • Meagan

Good reminder – we all need to hear this!

  • Ashley LaMar

We can learn so much from our pups. I often get reminded to just slow down and enjoy the little things. I mean, just seeing the overwhelming joy on their faces over something as simple as a belly rub is all I need to be like, “Oh yeah…enjoy the small things Ash.”

    • Meagan

Exactly! Or how excited he is when I come home – I should be that excited for my husband, right?? Charlie is quite wise :)

  • Chelle @ Blogs Like a Girl

I love this idea for a series! I’ve learned a lot from my cats. They’re jerks but they taught me that family and love comes in many forms.

    • Meagan

Absolutely! He is so spoiled, which is not a great lesson, but most of what he loves is so simple. I just needed to pay attention!

  • Nina B

I love this idea. He is too cute!

    • Meagan

Thank you! And he knows it :)

  • Rachel @ STCL

Such a fun idea! I’ve learned so much from my pup too. They’re the best :)

    • Meagan

They really are! I can’t believe it took me so long to start noticing his lessons!
