Chicago vs. Dallas

November 17, 2015 | 26 Comments

Here’s the ugly truth – After our weekend in Chicago/Milwaukee a few days ago, I cried the entire way to the airport.  It wasn’t pretty.  In my defense, it was the first time I had been back since we moved and I just couldn’t believe that we were flying somewhere to be “home”.  (I might have been overserved the night before as well, that couldn’t have helped).

Since Sunday, I’ve been spending a lot of time comparing Chicago to Dallas, or why I didn’t want to come back here.  While going through the process, I began to think of things I did like about Texas, and with a quick change of attitude began focusing on those.  Of course, there are always things that Chicago will be triumphant in, but in the true spirit of my very own blog title, I’m focusing on all of the good.

So naturally, let’s make a list shall we?

chicago vs dallas

|| Texas, hands down, has the best tex-mex.  And it’s everywhere… no shortage or scrambling to find a good taco or chips and salsa.

|| The weather.  We left here in 80 degrees and landed in Chicago in 40.  No comparison there!  And, in the words of my five year old, “In Texas, it snows like three times.  In Illinois, it snows like 2000 times.  Every year!”

|| Our house.  Simply put, we were able to get a lot more for our money here.  I love our house!  (Except for the no basement thing – that made things interesting when the tornado sirens went off at 4am today.  Party in the closet?!)

|| Our neighborhood.  Every house is full of a family, which we didn’t have in Illinois.  Our suburb is one of the safest in all of America, which is something to be proud of (and feel safe in!)

|| I’m able to stay home with my girls, and that has been a blessing.

|| We are in a new place, which means we have had/are having a lot of visitors this year!

Naturally, I need to give a shout out to Chicago things that will never be replicated: my friends, family, Portillo’s, Lou’s, Mariano’s, and a good trip on the Metra. Ok, so the last one is a joke – and the rest are about food.  #doyouknowme ?

I think that experiencing true Texas Tex-Mex food is on my bucket list! A house without a basement is such a strange concept to me! I don’t think you can build a house without a basement around here.

    • Meagan

It is strange, isn’t it? I kind of prefer it, but was really missing one during that tornado!

  • Chelsea

Dallas is on our list of potential places to live next year..I’m glad to hear you like it!!

    • Meagan

Oooh it is? I do like it – really good food and shopping, and the people are all SO nice!

  • Nina B

When I moved to SF, the first time I came back to Chicago was surreal and leaving was hard too. Good for you for looking at the positive.

    • Meagan

I’m coming back again next weekend and I’m nervous for a repeat!

  • Cassie Lee

Loooove that you’re seeing the positives. It’s ok to miss home, but it’s also important to not let that get in the way of embracing a new place!

    • Meagan

Absolutely! Certain things are difficult, but overall I think I’m moving in the right direction.

  • Bourbon & Lipstick

Good for you for finding the positive! Can’t imagine how difficult this is for you guys, but you’re making the best of it!

    • Meagan

I’m trying! Every day is a new day (which is also my new life motto!)

  • Faith Golden

I love your lists! And I’m glad you found the positives but I feel you girl. When I first moved from home I was begging LG to go every weekend and I would cry buckets of tears every time I left…it was nuts. Ha! I lived what your little girl said about the weather! Lol!

    • Meagan

It will get better each day… but being “home” just put me over the edge a bit!

  • Rachel @ STCL

There are so many positive things! I lived in Dallas for a summer and despite the heat, I loved it! YES to the best tex-mex!

    • Meagan

I haven’t experienced a full summer yet.. August was enough to scare me! Where was your favorite tex mex?

      • Rachel @ STCL

I think it was called Chuy’s. There were so many great ones though, it’s hard to pick just one!

        • Meagan

Oh yes, I’ve seen that! Good to know I should stop in sometime!

  • Ashley Servis

80 degrees sounds so nice. It is pouring rain and windy here in Oregon.

    • Meagan

It was nice but now it’s 40 and has been raining for four days!

  • Brianna

LOVE this and that you’re doing your best to focus on the positives, even when it’s the hardest thing to do. I absolutely love Texas, but I may be a bit biased. However, the thought of being so far from family is truly difficult… but no shortage of tex-mex is SO TRUE! Ha. Gotta love it.

    • Meagan

I think I would love any place if my family was close! But I’m focusing on the parts that I do love, and tex mex tops the list!

  • Emily @ Ember Grey.

Yes, girl. I am loving your attitude about all of this! And now I want to visit Texas! 😉

    • Meagan

Please do! Chips and salsa for daaaayyyyssss.

  • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life

This is the greatest attitude to have. Just remember that even happy and great transitions can be tough at times. I am craving some of that Tex-Mex!!

    • Meagan

Yes – I am trying to give myself some slack if I’m having a bad day. It’s ok to miss the past!

  • TheAdventuresofBugandBoo

I have been there with the tears…but it goes, and faster than you’d think! Lots of winning things about Texas, looks like – I’m coming for a visit and a tour of all the guac & margarita places!!! 😉

    • Meagan

It’s going… each day is a little better. And you are more than welcome to a visit :)
