Favorite Essential Oils to Diffuse

February 8, 2016 | 19 Comments

Although I still consider myself a “newbie”, essential oils have changed the way I do some things in my household.  There is still a lot to learn, and honestly with oils I think I will be constantly learning.  I do still use modern medicine, and haven’t completely gotten rid of my household cleaners – but I love diffusing oils for health benefits and to make my house smell heavenly!  I’d love to share with you my favorite essential oils to diffuse.

essential oils

Grapefruit, Lemon and Citrus Fresh:  These are great for having your house smell clean and fresh.  They are my favorite in the Summer months!  I name them together, but I diffuse them separately.  I’m sure they would be great together!

Cinnamon Bark: Yum.  This one is great in the winter months – and I love it with Citrus Fresh.  It makes my house smell and feel like home.

Stress Away: The name says it all.  I love the way this smells and I often diffuse it while relaxing at night.  It has hints of vanilla, lime and cedarwood.

Purification and Thieves: I diffuse these separately, but always when there is a bug in the house (not the crawly kind).  They smell great too!

Christmas Spirit: Ahhh, Christmas in a bottle.  With hints of orange, cinnamon bark and spruce it really does smell like the holidays.  It’s a favorite!

Citronella:  This one might sound odd – and I don’t diffuse indoors – but if we are bbq-ing or eating outside, I plug the diffuser in and set it on the outdoor table.  I don’t know how the mosquitoes are here in Texas yet, but it worked like a charm in Illinois!

Do you use essential oils?  Let me know how – like I said, I’m always learning new uses.  What are your favorites to diffuse?

Life Lessons from Charlie – v.2

February 3, 2016 | 16 Comments

If you are thinking, “Who the heck is Charlie and what can he teach me?” – you might want to start with v.2.  The abbreviated version is that I’m obsessed with my dog and he has reminded me of the most simplest things in life.

Life Lesson #2 – Eat to Fuel Your Body.

Lately, Charlie has been unintentionally reminding me to nourish my body with real food.  We all have heard to fuel our bodies healthy food – plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein, whole grains with limited sugars and sweets.  I will be the first to admit that sugar is one of my food groups and I rarely eat my daily recommended servings of fruits or vegetables.

Let’s take a quick look at Charlie’s diet – Orijen Adult Dog Food.  It’s ingredients are simple – 90% protein such as free chickens and turkey, whole eggs and wild caught fish.  The other 10% is regional fruits (from Canada).  There isn’t any carbohydrates or grains.  His treats are limited throughout the day (except on Christmas and his birthday of course!)

The results?  He’s very healthy at eight years old, has wonderful energy even with two littles chasing him all day, and has great skin and hair.  These are all attributes I wish I had (except maybe the eight years old part, but I would love to have the energy of an eight year old!).

My lesson this week from Charlie is that I should eat to fuel my body.  Limit my treats, drink plenty of water, and before I know it perhaps I’ll be running around the backyard for fun!

**In case you missed it, Charlie is still insisting that I give you a sale on all sponsor spots.  Code CHARLIELOVE gives you 50% off AND two free additional weeks.

February Goals

February 1, 2016 | 14 Comments

January came and went, and for a month that usually drags on for me, it felt so fast!  I have to attribute most of that to the fact that we had three visitors this month and the weather was fantastic.  This past weekend I even got a tan while playing outside!  I just have to pinch myself for a moment.  We played outside in January and we live here.  So strange, but in a great way!

monthly to do list

Before we get to my February goals, let’s check back on January’s goals and see how I did:

Focus on Health.  Wellll… I could have been better with this, but I wasn’t horrible.  I am striving for 10,000 steps a day and only hit it about five times.

Go through the Girls’ Clothes.  Finished!  I have sorted everything to sell for an upcoming consignment sale and have made a box of donations.

Blog Consistently.  Finished!  My goal was to post three times a week, and most weeks I did just that.

Regulate Spending.  I killed this one!  I bought myself one pair of jeans, and maybe three lunches all month.  Thirty one days!  I’m pretty proud of myself.

February Goals:

Finish Two Books.  My Goodreads list isn’t getting any smaller!

Become Texan.  Just legally, my heart will always and forever be in the Midwest.  I need to register my car and get a drivers license.  I’m having mixed feelings about this!

Go Through My Closet.  Going through the girls’ clothes sparked something in me, so my closet is next.  Before we moved, I was working, but now I have a lot of work clothes that I no longer wear.  Time to sell them to ThredUp!

Give Charlie More Walks.  My loving, snuggly pup loves to get out and explore.  Sadly, his exercise usually comes from playing fetch in the backyard.  I’ve been taking him out more lately and he loves it – so, I’d like to take him on a long way at least twice a week.

What are your goals for February?  We have an extra day this month to accomplish our to do lists!

Life Lessons from Charlie, My Pup – v.1

January 19, 2016 | 16 Comments

It’s really no secret that I’m borderline obsessed with my dog, Charlie. Well, all dogs really. What can I say? The wet nose, wagging tails and cuddly warm bodies get me every time!

The other day I was cuddling with Charlie on the couch (standard), thinking about how nice he has it – cuddles all day, plays with the girls, gets fed and scratched and is given way too many treats. And then it sort of hit me – I could learn a lot from this pup. Seriously!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some “life lessons” I’ve picked up on, just from watching my dog.

Life Lesson #1 – All You Need is Family.

It’s no secret that I’ve been having a difficult time with our transition to Texas.  I miss my best friends terribly, miss being physically close to my family, and miss life in Chicago in general.  But guess what?  I have my family.  I have my husband, who works so hard for us.  I have E and A, and they are generally healthy, which is such a blessing in itself.  I have a great house that the five of us (Charlie included!) call home.

Charlie is happiest when we are all in the same room.  Saturday mornings on our bed, cuddling and planning the day, he is at peace.  On the couch watching a movie, he is at peace.  When the girls get home from school, and with Daddy they play fetch with him, he is at peace.  Watching him so happy to just have us together reminds me that as long as my family is happy, I can be happy too.  Sure, I might be four states away from everything and everyone I’ve ever known, but my family is together and that is something I am extremely grateful for.

No Offense Taken

January 4, 2016 | 6 Comments

If you love the Iowa Hawkeyes (if so, we are bff), are a fan of Stanford, or like watching football in general, chances are you caught some of the Rose Bowl this past Friday. If the above are true, at the very least you heard about the halftime show. If not, you can watch it here.

Sure, Stanford won the game, by a lot and early on, but it is the band that everyone is talking about.

It’s all over the internet that Stanford made everyone mad for the third year in a row.  You’ll see in the video that they made fun of Iowa and Iowans – playing the farmersonly.com jingle while they had a cow run out on the field.  Apparently, they were booed by the thousands of Hawkeyes fans in the stands.  My friends on Facebook that were there, and those that were not, were completely appalled by their behavior.  At first, I was offended too.  Iowa is often the brunt of jokes – people assume I grew up on a farm, drove a tractor to prom, that there is no place to shop or that we are behind in every single thing happening in the rest of the country, among so many other stereotypes.

But then I was not.  Why?  Well, for starters – they didn’t even make fun of the right things.  Sure, a lot of the land is farm – but we produce mostly corn and soybeans, ranking #1 in the country.  (You’re welcome).  The cow that ran out?  It was a holstein – which is used for milk, not beef.  Don’t confuse us with Wisconsin (which is equally as great).

In college, I had a room mate from the southside of Chicago.  Campus was thirty minutes from my hometown, so we would sometimes watch my local news on t.v.  She used to make fun of the fact that they would report on the largest fish caught by local fisherman.  She thought it was ridiculous and laughable.  I would rather see news reports on something like fish, farming and dating sites for wholesome farmers than what she was used to seeing.

At the end of the day, Stanford was a better football team that day and won the game.  There is no denying that, or that they played well and deserved to win.

I understand why many people are offended by the band’s performance – it was a low dig.  But, I am proud to call Iowa home – no matter how “simple” the rest of the country may think we are.  I am grateful for the life I lived while growing up there.  A life that taught me how to dream big and catch the biggest fish.
